Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) concluded a successful week at Gastech 2026, engaging with customers, partners, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the global energy and maritime sectors.
Throughout the event, MOL highlighted its growing presence across the LNG value chain, showcasing capabilities spanning LNG transportation, Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs), Floating LNG (FLNG) projects, next-generation ethane carriers, and innovative vessel technologies designed to support the energy transition.

Advancing Energy Security and Regional Collaboration
The event provided a valuable platform for dialogue on the future of energy security, infrastructure development, and decarbonization across Asia and beyond.
On the opening day, Suryan Wirya-Simunovic, Chief Executive Officer & Director of MOL (Europe Africa), joined an industry panel discussion to share perspectives on how MOL is expanding its role across the LNG value chain and supporting the energy transition through integrated maritime and energy solutions.
MOL also welcomed visits from key industry leaders, including Dr Narin Phoawanich, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and Mr Disathat Panyarachun, Director of Gulf Development. Discussions focused on LNG infrastructure, energy security, and the role of maritime innovation in supporting the region’s evolving energy needs.
Further contributing to industry dialogue, Masayuki Sugiyama, Senior Managing Executive Officer of MOL, participated in a strategic panel examining energy collaboration between Japan and ASEAN. The discussion explored opportunities and challenges associated with scaling LNG, hydrogen, CCUS, and other emerging energy value chains through regional cooperation, infrastructure development, and regulatory alignment.
Demonstrating Progress in Decarbonization Technologies
A major theme throughout Gastech 2026 was the development of practical solutions to support maritime decarbonization.
During the event, MOL and Hanwha Ocean announced the successful completion of sea trials for an LNG carrier equipped with two Wind Challenger sails. The milestone demonstrated the potential of wind-assisted propulsion to improve vessel efficiency and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in shipping.
MOL and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) also provided an update on their jointly developed four-sail LNG carrier project. A key achievement announced during the exhibition was the award of Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS) notation by Lloyd’s Register, confirming that the vessel’s Wind Challenger system meets recognized safety, design, and operational standards. The certification marks an important step toward the broader adoption of wind-assisted propulsion technologies within commercial shipping.
In addition, MOL participated in an announcement marking the Approval in Principle (AiP) for a standard low-pressure liquefied COâ‚‚ carrier. The development represents a significant milestone toward the establishment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chains in Japan and supports future transportation solutions for captured carbon emissions.

Sharing Perspectives on the Future of Maritime Transport
Takeshi Hashimoto, Chairman of MOL, joined a panel discussion on advancing sustainable maritime infrastructure and fleet capacity, where he shared insights on the future of maritime transportation. Sharing MOL’s perspective on the future of maritime transport, he highlighted the importance of strengthening resilience, diversifying supply chains, and supporting energy security, particularly across Asia’s rapidly evolving markets

Strengthening Partnerships Across the Industry
Beyond the conference sessions and exhibits, Gastech provided opportunities for meaningful engagement with customers and partners from across the energy value chain.
MOL’s reception event brought together more than 100 customers, partners, and industry stakeholders, creating a platform for industry. During the event, Chairman Hashimoto expressed appreciation for the continued trust and support of MOL’s customers and partners around the world.
The MOL booth also served as a hub for dialogue throughout the week, enabling discussions on LNG infrastructure, maritime innovation, alternative fuels global energy transportation and more.
Looking Ahead
As the energy landscape continues to evolve, MOL remains committed to expanding its capabilities beyond traditional shipping through investments in LNG infrastructure, next-generation vessel technologies, carbon capture value chains, and integrated energy solutions.
The discussions, partnerships, and announcements at Gastech 2026 reinforced the importance of collaboration in addressing the energy and environmental challenges ahead. MOL looks forward to continuing to work alongside customers, partners, and stakeholders to support a more sustainable, secure, and resilient energy future.
